FROM OUR CEO: Messi Is In America. Now We Are Too.

Icons.com was launched in 1999. To give you a sense of how long ago that was, Google had gone live just a few months prior. Back then, the plan was to share stories from the players themselves while simultaneously delivering the world’s best signed sports memorabilia from a tiny office in Camden in North London directly to the doors of fans all over the world.

Twenty-six years later, we’re still doing what we do best — though now from a state-of-the-art warehouse on the south coast of the UK. That said, we’ve long since left the business of blogging to others.

In 2010, ahead of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, we decided to make our first real push into America, having been appointed FIFA’s official memorabilia partner. We teamed up with a soccer-specific agency in the U.S., Gilt Edge Soccer Marketing, whose Managing Partner, Scott Hutchison, became our man on the ground. It was as much of a shame then as it is now that he was and is a Chelsea fan — but you can’t win them all.

I joined Scott and our chairman Edward on a two-week road trip across the States, meeting with brands, retailers and media partners. It was scrappy but exciting and full of potential. And it worked. Our U.S. presence was up and running.

Over the years, we built lasting partnerships, ran standout campaigns, supported thousands of customers, and made some unforgettable memories along the way.

Like the time in 2014 when Scott and I found ourselves in the away end at Anfield with our now Director of Sales, Ben (a Liverpool fan like me) just in time to watch Gerrard slip, Ba score, and Chelsea spoil what we thought would be a title-clinching day. Scott celebrated like José Mourinho; Ben and I kept our heads down. Brutal stuff.

Those kinds of moments — the wins, the losses, the stories — are what make this more than just business. We’ve been at this together for a long time and there have been challenges.

Turns out running both iconsusa.com and icons.com was confusing search engines more than it was helping us so, sadly, our partnership with Gilt Edge came to a close. We needed a reset.

As the great Bill Shankly once said: “If you are first, you are first. If you are second, you are nothing.” We’ve always aimed to lead and now, with more experience and a sharper focus, we’re taking another shot at getting this right.

So, here we are: launching Icons Authentics USA. It’s a fully-incorporated U.S. business, led full-time by Scott. It marks a fresh start and a renewed commitment to the game in America.

Soccer in the U.S. is booming. It’s diverse, youthful, and it’s everywhere. The momentum isn’t just about the upcoming FIFA World Cup — which, at the time of writing kicks off in less than a year — it’s what comes after that truly matters.

And it’s fitting that our biggest icon, Leo Messi, now calls the U.S. his home too. As his exclusive global memorabilia partner, we’re ready to bring his story closer to American fans than ever before.

So, America, here’s what this means for you. You’ll still find us on Icons.com, but now you can shop in U.S. dollars, speak to a customer support team based in the U.S., and receive items shipped from within the States. That means no customs, no duties and no surprises. Just a faster, smoother service — and all the usual fully-fledged authenticity you expect from us.

We’ve been at this for 26 years. We’re not going anywhere. I’ll just need to get used to calling it “soccer” and wearing “cleats” not boots.

With this in mind our standard returns policy is in effect. So, if you find you are dissatisfied with your order, you may return your box for a refund, providing your shirt is still in a new and unused condition. Please note that you will be responsible for return postage costs within 14 days (returning the item to us within 30 days).

Our ideal candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of our customers and their needs as well as the packing and dispatching of all orders across our various sales channels.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

You must:

  • Be able to start as soon as possible
  • Have a passion for sport and football in particular
  • Have excellent customer service experience both online and offline
  • Possess pleasant phone manner
  • Have perfect English, written and spoken

It’s preferable, but not essential, that you:

  • Have 3-5 years of customer service experience, ideally in an e-commerce environment
  • Have experience of maintaining a high customer service ratings or reviews (e.g. via Trustpilot)
  • Have experience of order fulfilment for an e-commerce operation
  • Have experience of stock management systems
  • Have other language skills

DETAILS

  • This is a full-time, five-days-a-week role
  • Typical working hours are from 8.30am to 5pm
  • There may be occasional weekend work at peak times
  • You will get five weeks annual leave as standard
  • We offer a workplace pension
  • You will be based at our warehouse in Christchurch, Dorset
  • This role reports to our Head of Operations
  • The salary will be £22,000-£25,000 p/a depending on experience

There are lots of things we love about creating the world’s best signed memorabilia. But among the very best of those things is when we hear from our customers about how we made their day, their month or their year.

It’s better still when we’re told we brought unbridled happiness to a child’s face, reduced a parent to tears of joy or, quite simply, when we’ve made another birthday extra special. It’s why we do what we do.

At Icons we were thinking about what we could do in these uncertain times to bring more joy to the world. That’s when I remembered a phrase I like to use and one I try to live by: “choose generosity.”

So, this week we’re launching Giveback Giveaways across both Icons.com and A1 Sporting Memorabilia with the kind help of some of our closest partners, suppliers and friends.

We were thinking about what we could do to bring more joy to the world. That’s when I remembered… “choose generosity.”

All throughout this week we’ll be asking our fans and followers to nominate someone deserving to receive something special from us in the hope that it will bring them joy in these difficult times.

With a warehouse full of amazing products, continued worldwide distribution, and a little extra time on our hands, we figured we could put our efforts into getting gifts out to people across the UK and around the world. We’ll gather ten prizes across the two sites each week and, via social media, try to find the heroes who deserve them.

Why not nominate a nurse or a doctor working all hours; self-isolating grandparents stuck indoors; or a sports-loving child bored with no-one to play with.

We have signed shirts, photos and boots to giveaway, plus unsigned shirts, trophies, posters and footballs. With the help of our friends and colleagues at DHL International we can still get these great prizes out to all four corners of the globe.

One of our company mottos is that “we believe in heroes” and while that usually means the icons of sport we work with, right now it’s the people on the frontline of this global crisis. They need our support the most in these trying times so we’re asking you to help us find them.

From Our CEO: Business As Usual

Here at Icons.com, we wanted to provide an update for all our customers, suppliers and friends in sport. In particular we’d like to assure everyone that for the time being we are still operating business as usual – but, of course, there are a few changes.

We are still taking orders 24/7 from all around the world and dispatching said orders to 3-4 working day(s) timeframe. To allow this to continue, while adhering to the all the safe-working practices and protocols recommended to us by the UK government, we have closed our headquarters in London. Our distribution facility in Dorset is, at the time of writing, unaffected. 

We care deeply about the safety and wellbeing of our staff and all those around us. So we will continue to keenly monitor the ongoing developments and take every precaution as necessary.

We dispatch using DHL and their world class international shipping service and, as such, we’re able to continue to send out orders to all four corners of the world on a daily basis with no problems.

While the football season is suspended, we’ve decided to reach out to our friends and partners across the wider football community to give away some of our iconic products – hopefully bringing cheer to some lucky winners in these uncertain times. Look out for promotions, competitions and giveaways over the coming weeks. We’re very excited about what we have planned.

We’re On The Move! Icons Expands With New Warehouse Operation

Icons Shop Limited will next month expand its operational set-up with the opening of a brand new warehouse in Dorset.

As part of our ongoing commitment to bringing the world’s best signed memorabilia to fans all around the world, Icons.com is amalgamating a number of its operational processes along with sister brand A1 Sporting Memorabilia. The expansion will merge customer service, dispatch, shipping and framing functions to streamline our operation, bringing signed memorabilia to your door faster and more securely. We have also added to our ever-expanding team of passionate and experienced staff, who will oversee the transition at our new base and new London head office.

Please be aware that, due to the move, orders placed over the course of the next fortnight may experience slight delays to our standard delivery times.
